Penfield YMCA makes kids game for exercise

“The Eastside Family YMCA opened its Tween Wellness Center on Oct. 2. The branch converted a lounge, stocking it with strength equipment, seven cardio stations, and recumbent bikes in addition to the gaming systems and other exercise devices. Trainers stationed in the center teach kids how to use the equipment.

The center is open to YMCA members between 8 and 12, and 6- and 7-year-olds like PJ are allowed to use the gaming systems.

The new center follows the successful launch of a similar facility at the Northwest Family YMCA in Greece in 2007. By January, the Westside Family Branch in Gates will open its own, said Mary Kay Walrath, vice president of development and communication for the YMCA of Greater Rochester.”

YMCA Partners With Deca Sports Developer

“In a move that’s likely intended to capitalize on the runaway popularity of Wii Fit, the Palo Alto YMCA has announced a partnership with Hudson Soft that will bring Deca Sports for the Wii into the Bay Area fitness center.

Kicking off September 27, this event is the culmination of a week-long collaboration with the America On the Move Foundation — designed to encourage exercise and a healthy diet. The YMCA hopes to lure in big crowds for the final day of the promotion by offering multiple gaming stations featuring Deca Sports in the same space normally reserved for actual sports. Sure, the health benefits of pretending to play volleyball are debatable, but some people need to take baby steps. “
