A one-stop wellness solution for youth, the club offers a means to develop ’smart brains and dynamic bodies’ through unique fitness solutions called Exergames.
This new concept of combining entertainment and exercise comes as a solution to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and lifestyle related illnesses. ‘Obesity has reached alarming levels in the Middle East with over 45 per cent in the age group of 15 and 49 being overweight’, says Dr. Philip James, Chairman of International Obesity Task Force. The figures are expected to rise further in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

A study published late last year in the British Medical Journal shows exergames burn more calories than sedentary games or activities, but they don’t pack as much calorie-burning punch as the real games they’re replicating. The study, by England’s Liverpool John Moores University, involved six boys and five girls from 13 to 15 years old.

The exergames, which include Wii video games such as tennis, bowling and baseball in addition to the recently purchased Gamebikes
and Dance Dance Revolution
games, will never be a focal point of Moon’s curriculum.
Instead, they will complement the program’s more traditional sports and fitness activities, said Harry Watts, a Moon Area Middle School gym teacher.
Instead of standing on the sidelines during a sports game like angleball or waiting for a turn to work out on exercise equipment or do a fitness activity, students will be able to grab a Wii game controller or jump on a GameBike to fill the down time.

Exercise-themed video games are undoubtedly the fastest, and most public, emerging game genre. While some exergames are indisputably games – such as Dance Dance Revolution – others are simply interactive tools to help you achieve a health-related goal. Nintendo especially has recognized the compatibility of many exercise titles with its motion-sensing controllers, Wii Balance Board and portable touch-screen DS. For this reason, its products have been particularly attractive to health-conscious developers. Check out some of the not-quite-games that fall into the exergame category below.
